What Is Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Does your mouth need more repair than any single dental treatment can provide? Full mouth reconstruction is a comprehensive plan that combines multiple reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry procedures that transform the health, functionality, and aesthetics of your teeth. Sometimes called full mouth rehabilitation or full mouth restoration, this customized plan is the best way to restore your beautiful smile in a way that looks and feels natural.
The doctors at New York Smiles Institute are among the top dental professionals in NYC. For the best results, you need experienced dentists who specialize in cosmetic and implant procedures. Our team knows how to combine complex dental treatments for maximum effect so that you are proud to show off your smile once again.
Am I a Candidate for Full Mouth Reconstruction?
You may be a candidate for full mouth restoration for any number of reasons, including:
- Long-term poor oral hygiene (i.e., insufficient brushing and flossing) has left your mouth in disrepair
- A serious accident has caused damage to or the loss of many of your teeth
- Periodontal disease has advanced to the point where your teeth may not remain in the gums
- Certain genetic conditions make your teeth especially susceptible to infection and decay
Patients are often embarrassed over needing full mouth restoration, regardless of whether their dental problems are their fault. The important thing to understand is that no matter the specific reasons you may need full mouth reconstruction, the team at New York Smile Institute will provide top-notch care, treating you with dignity and without judgment. Furthermore, you will experience less embarrassment once you have restored a full set of teeth in your mouth.
Benefits of Full Mouth Restoration
First and foremost, our full mouth restoration patients are excited to have attractive, complete smiles once again. Being able to smile without hesitation boosts their self-confidence and, in turn, increases their professional and social opportunities.
Beyond that, the benefit of having a functioning mouth cannot be overstated. Having a full set of teeth allows you to chew properly and speak without impediment. You should notice an improvement to your overall oral health. Your full set of teeth will also protect the structure of your jaw, which can otherwise start to deteriorate without teeth present, in turn creating a sunken facial appearance.
Full mouth restoration is usually a smart decision from a financial perspective, as well. The cost of gradually fixing and replacing infected teeth is likely to be higher than devising a solid, all-encompassing plan.
How Do We Plan Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Every full mouth reconstruction begins with a thorough examination of your mouth, which includes taking digital images/X-rays of your teeth to properly assess the presence and extent of any decay or infection.
During a consultation, your dentist discusses the problems he has found and the recommended treatments for rehabilitating your mouth. Often, multiple treatments are possible for a specific problem. Your dentist can guide you through all your options so that you can choose the one that best corresponds with your goals and budget.
If overriding health issues like tooth decay, jawbone erosion, or periodontal disease are present, these will need to be addressed first — before beginning any restorative procedures. Appropriate treatments will be incorporated into the larger full mouth reconstruction plan.
Procedures Included in Full Mouth Reconstruction
As every patient comes to us with his or her own unique dental problems, there is no one set plan for full mouth reconstruction. Instead, our dentists will devise a plan customized to your specific mouth following an examination. While some patients need every tooth need replaced, others will be able to hold on to some healthy teeth.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a prosthetic that mimics a real tooth. Your dentist will surgically attach a post directly into your jawbone, and then — in a subsequent appointment after your mouth has healed — will screw a permanent false tooth onto that post.
Implants may be used to take the place of a single tooth or for every tooth you have missing. However, your dentist may suggest other, more efficient and less expensive methods to replace several teeth at once rather than using an implant for each tooth.
Crowns
In essence, a dental crown is a cap that fits over your existing tooth. It is used to conceal damage like cracks and/or strengthen a tooth that has been weakened from decay. Crowns are composed of a variety of materials and can be chosen to match the existing shade and shape of your other teeth for a seamless appearance. Crowns may be necessary for other restoration procedures like dental bridges.
Bridges
A dental bridge is a prosthetic device designed to fill space created by either a single missing tooth or a row of missing teeth. By getting rid of this vacancy, you not only restore your natural bite, but also prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of place.
There are multiple types of bridges, and our dentists will be able to recommend the type of bridge that makes the most sense for your situation. The most common is the traditional fixed bridge, which places crowns atop the healthy teeth on both sides of your gap to anchor a prosthetic tooth or teeth in place.
Dentures
For a full row or set of new teeth, your best bet could very well be dentures. Our team will take a mold of your mouth and then have a set of replacement teeth custom-built to fit your mouth. You may be a candidate for implant-supported dentures, which snap in and out of place on dental implants for easy removability and cleaning.
When patients are resistant to getting dentures, it is typically because of the associations they conjure up about the dentures worn by previous generations. Rest assured that contemporary models both look more realistic and fit better in your mouth. That means fewer “embarrassing” situations and that many people would never be able to guess you have dentures at all.
Porcelain Veneers
While veneers are generally considered more cosmetic in nature, for those patients who have had damage done to the frontside of their teeth (usually through physical trauma of some sort), veneers may be the best solution. Porcelain veneers are tiny shields that attach to the front of your teeth, and are available in any size, shape and color of your choosing. With veneers, you can achieve a full mouth makeover without having to sacrifice your healthy — albeit aesthetically flawed — teeth situated behind the veneers. Veneers do not stain and can last between 10 and 20 years with proper care.
What Is the Cost of Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Since each full mouth reconstruction is customized to the needs of the patient, the price can vary significantly. After your dentist assesses your mouth and devises an appropriate treatment plan, our team can provide a quote.
Dental insurance may not cover some of the treatments included in full mouth reconstruction. The team at New York Smiles Institute will help you to maximize your benefits. Financing options are available through CareCredit, a leading medical lender, if you would prefer to pay for your treatments in installments.
What to Expect from Full Mouth Reconstruction and Recovery
Although full mouth reconstruction plans differ significantly between patients, most require multiple appointments to complete the required work. Procedures like dental crowns, veneers, and dental implants are performed over at least a couple days. Although our dentists will minimize your time in the dental chair as much as possible, for the more involved procedures, we can use sedation to keep you calm and comfortable.
Your dentist may prescribe pain medication if necessary to relieve any post-procedure discomfort. The most involved procedures may require a day or two of downtime, but you should be able to resume most normal activities, including work, throughout the course of treatment. Tender, swollen gums may require you to modify your diet to feature softer foods while you recover.
Full mouth reconstruction results are generally considered indefinite. Crowns, fillings, dental bridges, and veneers may need to be replaced every one to two decades to maintain their functionality and attractiveness.
Why You Should Choose New York Smiles Institute for Full Mouth Reconstruction
The earlier you come in to handle dental problems, the easier it tends to be to make the necessary repairs. If you suspect you may need full mouth restoration, our friendly, professional team will conduct an examination to determine which procedures may be necessary — in many cases we may discover that many of your natural teeth can be preserved and devise a plan accordingly.
