Dentures
in NYC
Although there are several dental procedures available to strengthen or restore teeth (crowns, bridges, dental implants, etc.), if you are missing an entire row of teeth, the dentists at New York Smile Institute may suggest dentures as the best way to repair your mouth. Contemporary dentures are custom designed for your specific mouth, meaning that they fit more perfectly and look more authentic than versions available in previous generations.
Dentures Benefits
With dentures, your mouth will become functional again. Since missing teeth make it harder to both speak and eat, your dentures will help you overcome these types of problems. You may find that you need a little bit of practice to carry out these daily activities with your new teeth, but in short order you will be talking and eating better than you were without teeth.
The other benefit of dentures is more obvious — the aesthetics! The smile you have been stifling out of embarrassment will no longer be an issue once you have a complete set of beautiful teeth in your mouth.
Smile with Confidence
As dental professionals it is our priority to provide quality dental care you can trust.
Denture Placement Process
To start, your dentist will examine and take X-rays of your mouth for a thorough assessment of its overall condition. Any infected teeth that cannot be saved with other procedures will be extracted. If you and your dentist determine that dentures are indeed the right way forward, he will then take an impression of your mouth. You may give input as to the size and shade of the teeth that will be included in your dentures. Soon after, a laboratory will receive this mold and create a set of teeth out of resin or porcelain that is sized perfectly for your mouth.
Once the dentures are completed, you will return to New York Smile Institute to try on your new set of dentures and verify that they are the appropriate fit. If the dentures make a clicking sound or do not allow for a natural biting motion, then slight modifications may be required.
What are Partial Dentures?
Partial dentures are essentially the same as full dentures, except that they are designed to fit around any natural teeth that remain in your mouth. If your dentist at New York Smile Institute determines that you have some healthy teeth that can and should remain intact, partial dentures are a solution for completing your smile. They will be created in a process like the one used for full dentures.
Denture Results and Care
Remove your dentures every day to rinse them with a soap or denture cleaner — not toothpaste as that will cause the dentures material to erode in the long term. Brushing them gently is the best way to keep them fresh and clean.
Whenever you have your dentures out of your mouth, put them in water so that they do not lose their shape. Room temperature or cool water is much better than hot water, since the heat may cause them to warp. If your dentures warp, they may no longer fit in your mouth.
Your dentures should last between five and 10 years. With great care, you can help to extend their lifespan.
Am I a Candidate for Partial Dentures?
Replacing missing teeth is the best way to prevent further tooth loss. People who have lost multiple or most of their natural teeth may qualify for partial dentures. Some patients may have severe gum disease, tooth abscesses, or tooth decay that requires extracting the damaged or loose teeth. Men and women who struggle to chew food due to missing teeth are good candidates for partial dentures. Smokers and heavy drinkers are more likely to lose teeth as they age and don’t qualify for implants, making dentures an appropriate option for restoring their dental health.
Adults with tooth decay and gum disease may require root canal therapy or periodontal treatment before getting partial dentures. Some people with a few missing teeth are better suited for dental implants. Generally, people with multiple broken, chipped, or unhealthy teeth may achieve better results by extracting the damaged teeth and placing partial dentures.
How Long Do Partial Dentures Last?
Partial dentures may last five to 10 years or longer with regular teeth cleanings, proper care, and good oral hygiene. Poor oral hygiene or neglect can cause removable partial dentures to fail and may cause additional tooth loss. You can enjoy partial dentures for longer than average by brushing with fluoridated toothpaste twice daily, cleaning between the teeth once a day, using antibacterial mouthwash, and cleaning your partial denture properly. A lack of dental hygiene allows bacteria to flourish in the mouth and around the partial dentures, leading to bad breath, gum disease, plaque, and weakening of natural teeth.
Bi-annual dental visits can extend the lifespan of your partial dentures by ensuring the prosthetic is intact and fits well without irritating your oral tissues. Our experienced dentists can repair or replace the denture if necessary.
Your diet also matters. Sticky foods may get stuck between the artificial teeth on your partial denture and may even pull the denture out of place when you chew. Hard foods can chip or break the pontics as well. Avoid caramels, ice, nuts, popcorn, and similar foods.
